Today marks one year to go until the world’s best cross country and downhill riders hit Tropical North Queensland (Smithfield Conservation Park, James Cook University) for the 2017 UCI Mountain Bike World Championships Cairns.
The 2017 event will feature over 300 riders from 35 countries competing in the cross country (XCO) and Downhill (DHI) disciplines.
“Cycling Australia is extremely excited to be hosting this world class mountain bike event set in an iconic part of Australia that will showcase this incredible region to the world,” said Cycling Australia CEO Nicholas Green OAM.

Member for Barron River Craig Crawford said hosting the 2017 UCI Mountain Bike World Championships was a highly anticipated event that would showcase Cairns and Tropical North Queensland to a global fan base.
“With one year to go, Cairns is already gearing up for an event that will bring thousands of fans and spectators from around the world to Tropical North Queensland,” Mr Crawford said.
“This will be a wonderful showcase for Cairns as our beautiful region is broadcast to the world.” Minister for Tourism and Major Events Kate Jones said hosting the World Championships was a coup for Cairns that would bring economic benefits for the region.
“Events like the UCI Mountain Bike World Championships support Tropical North Queensland’s growing tourism economy and create jobs for Queenslanders,” Ms Jones said.
“Every additional visitor supports local businesses and we’re confident the World Championships will be a huge drawcard.”
The event will have significant TV and digital viewing presence including the distribution of television broadcast to a cumulative audience in excess of 6.13 million globally across 18 different nations.
