With a full calendar of international sporting events, cultural extravaganzas and major conferences and incentives, 2017 will be an epic year of events for Cairns & Great Barrier Reef. Tourism Tropical North Queensland Director of Business and Tourism Events Rosie Douglas said the destination’s event capabilities would be showcased throughout the year with an incredible array of events attracting visitors from around the world.
“International sporting events include the IRONMAN Asia-Pacific Championship Cairns in June, the UCI Mountain Bike World Championships in September and Round One and Round Three matches of the Rugby League World Cup in October and November,” she said.
“The biennial Great Barrier Reef Masters Games return in May and the city hosts National Rugby League and Australian Football League premiership matches in July.
“The Cairns Indigenous Art Fair in July draws national and international collectors, while the Laura Aboriginal Dance Festival in June is known as the most varied display of Indigenous culture in the world.
“In between there are numerous cultural and sporting events throughout the region including food festivals, horse racing carnivals, music from Opera in the Outback to eclectic folk festivals, and colourful fiestas showcasing the tropical lifestyle.
“As well as the many major and regional events, the destination will welcome prestigious international conferences with the Cairns Convention Centre hosting the WONCA World Rural Health Conference in May, the 37th International Symposium on Forecasting in June, the International Conference on Photonic Electronic and Atomic Collisions in July and the International Women & Law Enforcement Conference in September.
“Our dual World Heritage areas of the Great Barrier Reef and the Wet Tropics rainforest have proven to be highly motivating factors for people to attend a conference, a major event or a regional event and extend their stay to enjoy the diverse experiences our region offers.
“The number of international events in 2017 demonstrate the professionalism of the business events industry in Cairns & Great Barrier Reef which works collaboratively to ensure every event is seamless.
“Meanwhile, the high-profile sporting and cultural calendar is a testament to the region’s capacity to deliver world-class leisure events.”
