Cyclone season in Tropical North Queensland is November to April.
When a cyclone forms, the Bureau of Meteorology issues a Tropical Cyclone Watch 48 hours before the cyclone's predicted landfall. The Cyclone Watch bulletin advises the location and strength of the cyclone and what areas could be affected by it. Information is updated every six hours.
If a cyclone is expected to affect Tropical North Queensland within 24 hours a Tropical Cyclone Warning is issued by the Bureau of Meteorology. While the threat remains, a tropical cyclone advice will be issued every six hours, increasing to every three hours, then hourly if the cyclones moves close to the coast and poses a major threat. Tropical Cyclone Warnings include the location and strength of the cyclone, what areas are expected to be affected and information on forecasted heavy rainfall, flooding and storm surge associated with abnormally high tides where necessary.
Warnings and other emergency information is made available to Cairns local radio and television stations for broadcast. For the latest emergency information tune to:
